Engineering in Construction

Construction engineering is a vast field that tackles the designing, planning and managing the construction of various buildings. Its field of practice ranges from roads, airports, dams, commercial facilities to domestic building. Being such a vast domain, it has been divided in several sub-specialties. All in all, construction engineers have to be able to work with a large and diverse team and to apply their analytical skills. Every project is different and the approach from the construction engineer must match. They must design the project, plan the steps, manage the construction and repair any possible damage. To get a little bit more specific, engineering in construction implies knowledge in electrical engineering, material engineering, planning and plumbing. The construction engineer must be familiar with these entire domains in order to succeed in its projects.

In the past the engineers used to do the planning on paper. Nowadays they can easily use a computer to do all the planning, to draw the electrical system and the plumbing. Construction engineers must possess the skill of estimating, planning and controlling the costs of the project. We can say that they are the key and the brain of every project. The various knowledge they have is required in order to finish a project without any extra costs. Construction engineers also need to know the legislation of the area in which they plan to build. From environmental restrictions to special laws, they must be careful at everything. Before they start a project, they should check the local restrictions and construction codes because they might affect the initial plan.

Construction engineers are basically problem solvers. They must check everything before the projects starts, plan the suitable infrastructure, hire workforce when needed, check local regulation, estimate the costs and supervise the construction. All this is possible thanks to their minimum 4-year education. After this time, they get a bachelor degree and they are prepared to enter the field of work. A young construction engineer can make around 68000 dollars per year. This sum depends on the field of activity and experience. Al older construction engineer will naturally make more money thanks to the past experience and expertise.

Engineering in construction is divided in many different branches and engineers can choose to specialize in one of them or to have a more global approach. We have commercial construction engineering for example. The engineers that work in this field deal with large, demanding buildings that have to be very efficiently and cheaply built. Domestic construction engineers have to deal with the client a bit more. They deal with the construction of domestic buildings such as houses and apartment building. Naturally, the professionalism of the client can differ from project to project. Special types of construction engineers are the ones that plan the construction of dams and airports. Basically, they have a greater responsibility on their shoulders thanks to the importance and potential risk these buildings have. No matter the type, all construction engineers are problem solvers and we have to thank them for everything we see around us today.

The Amazing Field of Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical engineering can be defined as the study of the behaviour of the earth or different soils which are subjected to loading forces and soil-water interactions. This study is readily applied in the design of foundations, earth dams, retaining walls, geosynthetics for waste containment and clay liners. The objectives of this study range from the…
