The Different Types of Jobs in Engineering

There are many types of jobs available in the Engineering field, some of which pay a very high salary. Some of these fields are: mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering and petroleum engineering. Within each of these engineering fields are several sub-disciplines in which a person can specialize. To obtain a job in engineering usually requires a university degree and requires a very good knowledge and understanding of mathematics (often advanced mathematics), and physical science (especially physics).

Electrical Engineers

Electrical engineers work with electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. There are subfields within this discipline including computer electronics and telecommunications. A person can work as an electronic engineer, in which their role would be to develop and test electronic equipment. With the increase in popularity of computers, there has been an associated increase in the need for computer engineers. Telecommunications has also grown substantially over the last decade.

Mechanical engineers deal with machines and designing and testing of machines. This is different from electrical engineering but is just as important. Jobs in this field include the automotive industry (working on vehicles), to aerospace engineering, civil engineering and even nuclear engineering.  Every city needs to have civil engineers. The role of civil engineers is to help designing, developing and maintaining areas of infrastructure. A good knowledge of materials science is needed and an understanding of how to build safe structures that will last.

Other Engineers

A person who is interested in cars and engineering would be a good fit for the automotive engineering field. A person who is an automotive engineer is involved in designing and developing automobiles and their component parts. Testing components and solving problems is also a part of this job.

If you have ever wanted to work for NASA, then aerospace engineering may be where your interest lies. Of course, there have been substantial cutbacks in the space industry, so the demand for workers may not be as high in this field as it used to be. However, what you may not realize is that aerospace engineers also design and work on airplanes, so there is a demand in this area. The aerospace engineer needs to be able to design, test and evaluate aircraft design for safety and functionality. There would also be a demand for aerospace engineers in the defense system where new military aircraft are constantly being designed, tested and evaluated for potential use in defense and wartime situations.

Industrial engineer jobs involve being able to design various facilities such as buildings, equipment and rooms, as well as various production systems in the manufacturing industry. If you are the sort of person who likes to solve problems and wants to contribute to society, then becoming an engineer may be just right for you. Bear in mind, that you need to be good and passionate about mathematics and science to enter and work in these fields.
